ON THE TOFUA.
PASSENGERS FROM; ISLANDS. HEAD OF THE MATSON LINE. Having called tenders for two large oil-burning vessels for the San FranciscoSydney mail service, Captain Chas. W. Saunders, operating manager of the Matson Navigating Company, is taking a world tour, and with a family party of four, he arrived in Auckland this afternoon by the Tofua from Suva. The two new steamers will do the voyage from San Francisco to Sydney in 15 days, thus replacing three vessels which carry out the service at present. They will be the last word in construction. They will not have bunks in the cabins, but up-to-date beds. With Captain Saunders is his brother, Mr. Tlios. W. Saunders, of Boston, who is vice-president of the Atlantic National Bank. The party leave for Sydney on Friday, Also on the Tofua, was Dr. Carrington /Mail, for six years Government Health Officer in Apia, who is en route to Geraldine to commence private practice. Messrs. K. Meyer and A. R. Cobcroft, planters in Samoa for the past 18 years, are travelling to Australia, Java, Ceylon, England and Germany. They speak iiopefully of the future of the copra industry in Samoa, and intend making comparative- observations in Java and Ueylon.
