MISSING LAUNCH.
CREW OF SEVEN MEN SAFE.
ASHORE AT WHANGAPARAOA.
LANDED. IN FAMISHED CONDITION,
STRUGGLED ALONG CLIFF IN P^K.
Storm-tossed for 38 hours in the gulf the launch Ngaru, of Coromandel, with seven men on board, was cast upon a rockbound shore at the Whangaparaoa early this morning. In the darkness in the hours before the dawn the men struggled along the cliff-tops carrying one of their number, until, famished and foot-weary, they reached the Shakespeare homestead about 7 a.m. They told a stirring story of an adventurous voyage from Coromandel, which they left on Sunday morning. Through the breakdown of the engine the launch was at the mercy of a gale and a raging sea. Last night a blanket saturated with petrol was burned as a flare in an endeavour to attract the attention of the Tiri lighthouse keepers. It was providential that the launch missed the saw-toothed reef off the end of the peninsula, a swirling sea carrying the little craft into a sheltered indentation.
