With quickening interest in the League cup contests there was an attendance bordering on 5000 at Carlaw Park on Saturday afternoon, when a delectable menu of fast and open football was offered. Mariets and Ponsonby had pride of place on the list of attractions, and the game was full of lively incident, a plethora of thrills maintaining keen interest in the contest from bell to bell. Victory went to suburbs, who teamed nicely, used their weight in the pack and swung the ball about with finesse in lively fashion. The surprise of the day was sprung by City, who scrambled through to victory over Richmond in the dying stages of a game that was thrilling for its fluctuating fortunes. On the Domain it was Newton's lucky day, fine kicking by Brimble giving them the decision over Kingsland, who dominated the play. Out at Ellerslie the home team met defeat at the hands of the Devonport tourists, who, with City, are level at the head of the championship table, neither side yet having suffered a reverse.

CITY SHOCK RICHMOND.

After an exciting struggle. City won from Richmond by 15 points to 12 in the last few minutes of the game.

City opened with a nice passing bout, but a red and black forward was ruled offside and Mincham opened Richmond's score with a penalty goal. In reply City besieged and I/ascoe kicked through, for Town send to score. Borehard easily goalcil.

Richmond's backs revealed brilliancy in a passing bout, and Mincham outpaced the opposition to score a splendid try, and equalise. A few minutes later Richmond were penalised, and Barchard placed in the lead with a goal.

Perry nearly let Richmond in with a foolish kick across the mouth of the goal, but weak handling cost Richmond a try. Hamilton made a clever opening and short punted over City's line. McKinnon raced on to touch down. Mincham missed.

Just before the spell, City's backs broke away, and Perry made a beautiful opening. Five players handled in turn and Perry flashed into the movement to score a great try. At this stage the scores were: "City 10, Richmond S.

After fast <?nd fluctuating play Hamilton from a penalty goalod for Richmond and again the scores were equal—-10 all. Richmond were lucky to clear after City had pressed for ten minutes. Hanlon found the line with a-great kick, hut Perry and Iver.son changed the play with clever passing. Then Hamilton gave Richmond tiie load again with a. penalty. Just two minutes before time Reynolds scorer! a brilliant try from a scrum and Wilson-lfall placed the game beyond all doubt by converting. City 15, Richmond 12. Mr. B. Emerali was referee.

PONSONBY DOWNS MARISTS. Electric football was provided in the principal game of the day between Marist Old Boys" and Ponsont>y, victory resting with the latter by 14 points to 10. Western Suburbs were far superior to their opponents, and Tykes were lucky to keep the score within the bounds that they did.

Marisfs came with a rattle, but a passins rush ended at the goal mouth. Moislpy was on the ball in a Hash, made a yard and swung a pass to McDonald, who dived across under the posts. Clarke goaled.

For Pousonby Delgrosso cut his way through the defence to fall inches short of a try, and then in a melee on the green's last line. Payne secured and forced his way over. Delgrosso equalised with a neat kick. Ponies came hammering again with their hacks fanned out. Gardiner passed the ball on to Thompson, to Kimberley, who finished off a bright movement. Del-

Changing over, Marists. led by Clarke, attacked and a passing rush ended in Brady circling behind the posts. Clarke converted. When the suburbs were next besieging, "Stump" Campbell was penalised lor not lotting the ball in the scrum, and Delgrosso raised the flags for the fourth time. Tykes got their opponents' on tin; run, hut Schofield stemmed the tide in the nick of time. SHORE JUST BEAT ELLERSLIE.

Journeying to Ellerslie to play the home team, Devonport gained a hard-fought victory by 10 points to 12. Up and under l)ut Shore on the offensive, and good following up saw Masefield over near the posts. Seagar raised the flags. Ellerslie retaliated with a tine forward rush, but Seagar relieved. The next addition to the total came when McCarthney went over under the posts. Seagar again converted. Kllerslie forwards were doing a lot of work, but were not getting the best of support from the backs. A good opening by Seagar saw him combine well with Beattie, and pretty passing between the pair saw Beatlie score. Seagar did not convert. Halftime came with the scores:—Devonport, 13: Ellerslie, 0.

From Hie commencement Shore attacked and L. Scott, after a brilliant run down the line, scored at the corner. Ellerslie now began to show more combination, but overeagiTiK'ss often spoilt many promising movements. Hemingway opened ISllerslie's account by kicking a goal from a penalty. This put more heart into the Ellerslie team, and a passing rush from OllifC saw Littlewood evade two men aud score at the dprucr. For not playing the ball, A. Scott was penalised, and Hemingway took two points. Johnston, ■ dribbling the ball at toe, went right through Shore and scored in a good position. Hemingway converted.
