MR. ALFRED BARTLEY.
With full honours of friendship ami respect there took place at O'Neill's Point cemetery yesterday afternoon the funeral of the late Mr. Alfred Bartley, son of the late Mr. Edward Bartley, one of the old pioneers of Auckland, and at one time one of the best-known architects in'this city. The Anglican burial service was conducted by tile Rev. H. B. Winglield, and the Masonic service by Mi*. Oliver Nicholson, as Provincial Grand Master, assisted by the Rev. A. M. Niblock. The large gathering included many relatives, personal friends, members of the Masonic order and bowlers. Both services were deeply impressive. The death gf Mr. Bartley, which took place at Devonport at' the age of Jw years, removes one of the borough's best-known citizens and one who in his day was ariiong the best ' piafadfbi'te accompanists in New. Zealand. When the noted violinist, Ovid Musin, visited Auckland some years ago Mr. Bartley acted as his accompanist and so impressed was the visiting master that he invited the Auckland musician 'to accompany him on his-travels. ■ A friendly and likeable man, Mr. Bartley made many friends. For four years he was a member of the Devonport Borough Council and rendered useful service on the works committee. Mr. Bartley was Worshipful Master of Albion Lodge in 1903, and since that year he had many times occupied the position of organist of the lodge. He was Past Grand Organist of the Grand Lodge of New Zealand and his musical services at consecration' ceremonies were highly valued. One of. Mr. Bartley's many social interests was . the Savage Club and for years he took a leading part in arranging the musical programmes. • The death of Mr. Bartley came as a shock to his many friends. He had lately undergone a severe operation but appeared to be making a good recovery. His health then failed and he. gradually sank. He will be missed by a. lar«e number of friends because of the brotherly qualities which endeared him to all.
