PETROL CONSUMPTION.
72 PER CENT IN NORTH ISLAND SOUTH ISLANDERS SURPRISED. MiLIvING PLANTS AND MOTOR BOATS. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. That 72 per cent of the petrol imported into New Zealand is used in the North island and only 2S per cent in the South, was a statement wliich caused surprise at a meeting of the executive of the South Island Motor; Union. It was stated by members that the reasons were probably that the North Island possessed many more milking machines mid that the large fleet of motor boats, particularly on Auckland harbour, also had a bearing on consumption. ' The executive, which received the record of percentages from the Main Highways Board, decided to ask the board to state the taxable value of petrol consumption in each island.
