MR. ALLUM'S POSITION.
TRANSPORT CHAIRMAN. INTENDS TO CARRY ON. TILL COUNCIL CONSIDERS MATTER. "I have given thought to the position, and I consider it my duty to carry on as chairman of the Transport Board until the City Council has an opportunity to deal with the matter," said Mr. J. A. C. Alium, chairman of the Auckland Transport Board, when asked what action he intended to take seeing that he had not been returned as a member of the City Council. On making further inquiries a "Star" representative was informed that under the Transport Act of last year it is competent for the City Council to appoint any person to the Auckland Transport Board whether they are on 'the City Council or not. The Auckland Transport Board has in effect been appointed to hold office till the first Wednesday in May, 1931, but the various local bodies within the area may change their representatives at any time. On the first Wednesday in May, 1931. the board will be an elective body, and members will be returned under ' the municipal franchise. Under clause 6 of the Auckland Transport Act provision is made in subsection D to the effect that members of the board elected by nomination shall hold office until the first Wednesday in May, 1931, provided: "That tlie local authority or authorities appointing or electing them may at any time after the first "Wednesday in May, 1929, and before the 31st clay of May, 1929, remove any member or members appointed by such local authority or authorities and appoint another or others, in his or their place or places to hold office until the lirst Wednesday of May, 1931, and the provision of this section shall, mutatis mutandis, apply to any such substitutionary appointment."
