BAILDON ELECTED.

THIRD TERM AS CITY MAYOR. EIGHT NEW COUNCILLORS. MR. ALLUM AMONG REJECTED. DR. GUNSON ON HOSriiAL BOARD.

With a four-cornered contest for the Mayoralty as the principal attraction, and 67 candidates for 21 seats on the City Council, it was anticipated that electors of the city would display a lively interest in yesterday's poll, but the number of votes cast was disappointing. An analysis reveals that only half of those' on the roll exercised their privilege. Mr. Baildon was returned as Mayor for his third successive term, with a comfortable majority of 890., After the receipt of the first eight returns his election was never in doubt. The three unsuccessful candidates polled remarkably well. The defeat of five sitting members and the return of eight new representatives results in a considerably altered City Council personnel. A noteworthy feature of the election was the return of Mr. G. W. Hutchison, a new member, at the top of the poll. Thirteen sitting members were returned, but among the unsuccessful were such useful members as Mr. J. A. C. Allum, chairman of the Water Committee and chairman of the Auckland Transport Board, and Mr. S. I. Crookes. Misses Ellen Melville and A. Basten retained their seats, but the other women candidates were among the defeated. The Hospital Board election resulted in the return of four of the five sitting members, Dr. E. B. Gunson, a newcomer, who polled next best to the popular chairman, displacing Mr. G Knight. There is no change in the city's representation on the Auckland Harbour Board, as the electors returned the four sitting members—Messrs. Hutchinson, Bloodworth, Inder, and Johnston. An interesting sidelight of the election is the defeat of Mr. J. Hislop by Mr. A. E. Greenslade, Mayor of Northcote, as the representative of the North Shore boroughs. Solid support was obtained both by the retiring chairman, Mr. H. R. Mackenzie, and the vicechairman, Mr. M. H. Wynyard, the forme* representing Manukau and Franklin, and the last named Southern and Eastern Suburbs.
