RACE TO MATIATIA

WON" BY NGA TOA

Conditions were decidedly moist on the harbour on Saturday afternoon for the fleets of the. Royal Xew Zealand Yacht Squadron and Devonport Yacht Club?, but there was quite a good muster of boats, yachtsmen not being deterred from carrying out their fixtures in the face of a cold easterly breeze and driving rain.

Th race for keel yachts was to Matiatia Bay, Waiheke. and was sailed in conjunction with the Devonport Yacht Club, starting off the King's wharf at 2.30 p.m.. Nga Toa winning easily. Ariki and several others put into Islington Bay.

The entries and handicaps were: Ariki. srr; lornngi. 3Jm : Thelma. 4m; Nga Toa 4m; Prize, 10m; Moana, 10|m; Waitangi 12m; Ilex. 17m- Kotiri. 18m; Windward! 21m ; Rangi, 23m ; Scout, 24Jm; Delville, 24 Jm.

Owing to the gun mlssfiring there was .«nmc confusion at the start, and Ariki Windward and Rangi returned and recrossed the line. Ilex was first away, followed by Rangi. Nga Toa, Ariki. Delville. Waitangi. Windward, Scout, Kotiri and Thelma in that order.

The easterly wind gave a beat down harbour and all the way to the finishing line at the entrance to Matlatia Bay, where the times were taken by lorangi's crew. Nga Toa was leading the fleet at North with Ariki. Delville, Rangi, Ilex and Windward the nearest boats. Nga Toa continued to lead. The finish was timed Nga Toa. 4h SOm 20s: Kotirl, 5h 2m 21s ; Windward, 5h 3m 255; Rangi. 5h llm 18«; Ilex. 5h 13m 565; Scout, 5h 20m 6s; Delvllle, 5h 23m 48s. Result: Windward, 1 : Kotiri. 2; Nga Toa, 3. M Class.—A race was also held for th* Squadron's M class of 18-footers. It was tailed in conjunction with the Devonport Yacht Club, starting and finishing off the Victoria wharf. Maratea. Mawhitl. Maroro. Manene and Matarere started in this order over a course round Bastion and the white light buoy in the channel, back roun«l Resolution buoy off Parnell. round mark off Stanley Bay. finishing at Victoria wharf. The easterly breeze gave the boats a beet out to the first mark, Maratea and Maroro leading. Manene overhauled the two leaders and was first ronnd, increasing her lead on the run with spinnaker* «et to Resolution. The wind fell light on the lead up from Resolution to Stanley Bay, Manene continued to lead with Maroro second and Maratea third. Soon after rounding Stanley Point mark the wind backed into the north and tbe boats were able to lay through to the finish. wWch was timed :—Manene, 4h 22m Sss • Maroro. 4h 25m ss; Maratea, 4h 27m 17s; Matarere. 4b 28in 30s; Mawhlti, 4h 38m 30a. Result: Ml&nene, 1 ; Maroto, 2; Maratea, 3. Manene reported a foul between her and Maratea.
