MATAMATA.

Devey and presented him with a cheque in "recognition of the services he had rendered both lodges. Mr. Devey, who was a Matamata Rugby rep. last season, has left to reside in Palmerston North.

At the Matamata bowling green on Satnrday members took the opportunity of bidding farewell to Edward and Allan Bowler, two foundation members, who have retired to take up their residence at Te Aroha. Each was presented with a solid leather bowling bag. At the fortnightly meeting of the Matamata Town Board the clerk reported that less than three per cent of the current years rates were outstanding. Mr. A. Brown, has disposed of the Star Hotel to Mr. Ray Purcell, of Auckland, late of Opotikl. Mr. Pnrcell takes possession at the end of this month. Mr. Brown has been licensee of the Star Hotel for the past 17 years. It was decided to hold a shopping day on the Saturday of the Exhibition Carnival Week, and to ask the railway to run special excursion trains on that day.

The Mayor (Mr. Dire) -will be a candidate for a seat on th# Tauranga Electric Power Board.

The Minister of Public Worts, replying to a request from the county council that the Government taka over the Waioeka •pedal rating loan of £4000, stated that there was no legislative authority to do so. Investigations would be made during the year by the Lands Department Into county Indebtedness. Mr. Small quoted a ruse to the Waioeka loan in the Raglan County, wherein the Government had subsidised the special rates to the extent of £300. It was resolved to secure particulars. The Postmaster-General wrote stating that the department could not see any advantage in transferring the Waimana district from the Glsborne to the Thames postal district. The council decided to grant the borough council £30 for work at the Opotlki Cemetery. It was decided that members of the council meet the settlers concerned in connection with rivar erosion on the Otara road. Councillors expressed the opinion that the experimental section of tar-sealing put down at Waiotahl was a failure as fast cars used the sealed road as soon as laid. The clerk reported that the connty overdraft stood at £7200. Rates struck amounted to £21,000, £13.000, of which had been collected. Mr. Saxby, who was attending his last meeting, was farewelled bv the chairman, Mr. J. H. Reld, who thanked" him for bis services on behalf of the Coast Biding, and the connty generally.

If the Highways Board would Increase its offer to *4 for £1. to seek- authority from the ratepayers to accept.
