TIMBER FOR PORTUGAL.
BEECH FOR WINE CASKS.
exported from: southland.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
DUNE DIN", this day.
I lie beech timber produced in Southland has found a ready market overseas in account of its particular qualities. One of the latent developments in this industry is tho exportation of beech to Portugal, where this timber is found to be exceptionally suitable for the manufacture of wine casks. Previously wine merchants in that country used oak from Liberia, but supplies there have now been cut out. Melbourne and Sydney act as distributing centres for beech from southern mills, and from there it is exported to many parts of the world. It is estimated that between three and four ill ion feet of beech are shipped to Australia every year from Southland.
