SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

The children of the Cradle Roll were entertained, with their mothers, to a social on Thursday afternoon. The president, Miss Read, spoke a few words of welcome. Musical items were rendered by Miss C'ailer, and Mrs. Atkinson sang a solo. Miss Read gave a recitation, entitled "The Gospel According to Mothers." The children had their photograph taken, after which tea was served. Mrs. Andrew, Cradle Roll superintendent, gave each child a toy.

The first social gathering of this year of the Girls' Friendly Society was held at the lodge, Wellesley Street, on Wednesday. Dr. Mildred Staley gave a particularly interesting address ou her recent trip to Honolulu, where she went as a delegate in the great conference of the National Council of Women, who came from all the countries bordering 011 the Pacific. She was specially struck with the great efficiency of the American women. After the address, game 3 and supper were enjoyed. Genuine wishes of good luck to Miss W. Averill, who has always been a keen worker in the society, were expressed for her happiness and well being on her holiday to England.

A meeting took place yesterday morning in the lounge of the Lyceum Club to organise and (arrange for a bridge drive, which will be held at the Ellerslie tea kiosk early in May. The proceeds are to be used to assist the Rev. Jasper Oalder's proposed shelter for men who »r© out of work and are forced to sleep in the Domain because they are homeless. It is hoped that the ladies of Auckland will rally round and give the movement all their support. Amongst the ladies present were: Lady Carrick Robertson, Mrs. J. B. Macfarlane, Mrs. Watson Airey, Mrs. Alan St. Clair Brown, Mrs. W. A. Perkins, Mrs. Tiarks and Mrs. O'Halloran.

An enjoyable surprise evening was spent at Mrs. Johnston's residence, Ruru Street, last Tuesday evening. Mr. David Johnston was the guest of the evening, and Mr. Claude Webber was presented with a small trophy on his departure for Rotorua. Messrs. J. Hill, Gilbert Burke, and R. Jacobsen entertained with a new selection of games, and songs were rendered by Miss Laird, Mr. J. Allen and Mr. Atwater. Mr. R. Jacobsen gave several humorous recitations. Among some of those present were: Mr. and Mrs. Johnston, Misses Lena and Lily Johnston, the Laird sisters, Mrs. Webber, Mrs. Aicken, Mrs. Swift, Mrs. Laird, Mrs. Nicol, Miss Hill, Miss N. Brown, Miss B. Bougher, Misses K. and A. Jacobsen, Miss Dawson.

Miss Winifred Averill, Auckland Divisional Commissioner of Girl Guides, was guest at honour at a farewell tea given by the provincial executive and the district commissioners in the lounge of the Lyceum Club yesterday afternoon. Beautiful blooms of dahlias in exquisite autumn colouring made the lounge a most attractive picture, and cosmos and other autumn flowers added to the effect. On arrival Miss Averill was greeted by Dr. Buckley Turkington, provincial commissioner, who later presented her with a bouquet and a small gift on behalf of the gathering. Amongst those who were present at the tea were: Miss M. K. Wilson, divisional commissioner, Ayrshire, Scotland; district commissioners, Mrs. Mc.Nair, Mrs. Rochard, Mrs. Perniva.J, Mrs. Warnock, Mrs. J. F. Montague, Madame Edith Baird, Mrs. Bamford, Mrs. A. D. Campbell (Mayoress) and Miss Smeeton.

"Springside," Helensville, was gay at Easter, when a fancy dress ball was held. A concert was also given by the following: Elocutionary numbers by Miss Dorothy Griffiths, songs by Miss Sybil Phillipps, Miss Fan Fitchett, Miss Penman and Mr. Lowe and humorous monologues by Mr. Rowe. Dancing, bowls, tennis, cricket and bathing in the large pool were very much enjoyed. Among some of the guests were:—Mr. and Mrs. T. Sloman, Mr. and Mrs. H. V. At. the last meeting of the League "t X.Z. Penwomen an interesting address was given by Miv. -J. H. Ansell, on her travels in .lava anil Malay. The lecturer drew faseinating pictures of the beauty of tlie Eastern temples, describing in detail their elaborate exterior, ornamented with pottery of all descriptions, the gilding of their line spires and the ornate decoration of tTieir interiors. She referred to the wealth represented in the many figures of the Buddha, covered with gold leaf, and the accumulation of rare and valuable porcelain. Being a privileged visitor to the Royal Palace when a prince of the blood had died and was lying in state, she again saw a marvellous collection <>f porcelain. Mrs. Ansell conveyed to her hearers very vivid impressions of the beauty of the landscape and concluded a moist interesting address by allowing specimens of Ka stern pottery. Mrs. Stuart Boyd, who presided, moved a. very hearty vote ot thanks to the lecturer, and expressed the appreciation of all the members. Afternoon tea was served
