RAILWAY WORKSHOPS.
STORIES OF DISCONTENT.
FEELING OF MEN" INDICATED.
Although no evidence that go-slow tactics are being employed by the railway employees engaged in the running of 1 rains could be obtained in Auckland to-day, it was learned from reliable sources that there arp, indications that th» workshops hand 3 in the North Island are not turning out the quantity for which provision has been made.
It was explained that the reasons were many and varied. One was that the change over was made too soon— as a. matter of fact, before the «hops were ready. Another excuse, or reason, was that the men had been disgruntled at having to shift their homes from various places in the North Island to the sites of the new workshops. It is said also that there is some discontent because of the amount of modern machinery installed, which has deprived some men of their jobs, and also because of Ihe tendency, on account of those machines, to speed up work. Other workmen were of the opinion that the general layout of the shops, especially at Otahuhu, was not conducive to the quick handling of repairs or work generally.
Others were quite frank in admitting that certain gangs had come to some port, of agreement among themselves that, only a certain amount of work would be turned out per day. When further investigations were made regarding the la = tmentioned happenings it was ascertained that these men held the opinion that more workmen should he employed and they were not going to do work to keep others out of a job.
