TEMPTED TO STEAL.

YOUNG CARPENTER'S LAPSE,

PLACED ON PROBATION

Having already pleaded guilty to two charges of stealing a suitcase containing clothing and other articles valued at £S 10/, and a gramophone and records worth £11 8/, from a bac-li at Milford on March 2(5 and 27, Leslie Robert Stewart (23). appeared before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M.. at the Police Court to-day for sentence. It was stated by Chief Detective Hammond that accused had been living next door to the b<ioil. wliieli was unoccupied on March 2<i and 27. One day he went in and stole the suitcase, and the next day lie took the gramophone and records. The suitcase and contents were sold to a dealer for £1, and the gramophone and records were pledged for £4. Stewart, who was a single man and a carpenter, had never been in trouble previously. Mr. ,T. F. W. Dickson said for Stewart that he had been working for a man who had not paid him lii.s wages, with the result that Stewart had been "up against it."
