TEMPTED TO STEAL.
YOUNG CARPENTER'S LAPSE,
PLACED ON PROBATION
Having already pleaded guilty to two charges of stealing a suitcase containing clothing and other articles valued at £S 10/, and a gramophone and records worth £11 8/, from a bac-li at Milford on March 2(5 and 27, Leslie Robert Stewart (23). appeared before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M.. at the Police Court to-day for sentence. It was stated by Chief Detective Hammond that accused had been living next door to the b<ioil. wliieli was unoccupied on March 2<i and 27. One day he went in and stole the suitcase, and the next day lie took the gramophone and records. The suitcase and contents were sold to a dealer for £1, and the gramophone and records were pledged for £4. Stewart, who was a single man and a carpenter, had never been in trouble previously. Mr. ,T. F. W. Dickson said for Stewart that he had been working for a man who had not paid him lii.s wages, with the result that Stewart had been "up against it." He stole the articles so he could pledge them and obtain money to pay a debt and buy some food. Mr. Hunt admitted accused to probation for two years, and ordered him to nv-il.v restitution of
