HARBOUR WORKS.

THE WESTERN RECLAMATION.

FREEMAN'S BAY VIADUCT

Satisfactory progress has been made with the western reclamation, according to a report submitted to the Harbour Board this afternoon by the enginner (Mr. D. Holderness). Under contract No. 861, Messrs. J. .T. Craig have delivered 66S cubic yards of stone, making 830 to date. The contractors experienced considerable difficulty in depositing the stone into the position required on the outer embankment, and they were constructing a road on top of the Western Breakwater at their own expense to enable stone to be deposited direct from lorries. About 1620 cubic yards of town filling were "'ceived, making the total to date 13,993 cubic yards. The eastern portion of the viaduct to Freeman's Ba;, was approved by the board on March 19. and tenders were called for steel on the following day. In the meantime preparations were being made to commence pile-making with steel already in stock. Tenders have also been called for shingle and pileshoes and an early start on this work would be made. The board approved the construction of the western vehicular ferry, and an immediate start would be made and tenders called for the various supplies required. The first of the two cranes for western wharf was completed. Erection of the second crane was well advanced and the under carriage had been placed in position. The cranes were likely to be of great assistance in the discharge of coal cargoes both for the gas company and into hulks for which latter purpose they were equipped with very long radius jibs.
