SWIMMING.

DEVONPORT'S CARNIVAL.

88OYDS CHAMPIONSHIP TO

BRIDSON.

MISS STOCKLEY'S UNOFFICIAL RECORD. More interesting racing than that which the events at the Devonport Swimming Club's carnival (held at the tepid baths last night) produced, could hardlv have been wished for. There were close and exciting finishes to all the finals, and few of the heats were won with comfort, with the result that the crowd in the packed galleries was treated to a first-class carnival.

It must be admitted though, that the drawing caid of the evening, the 330 yds championship of Auckland, which was swum for the first

time in several years, was rather a disappointment, as G. Bridson was by no means extended. It was regrettable that D. P. Lindsay did not turn out, for had he done so, it would have bt»en a much more interesting contest. Any follower of swimming in Auckland, knows that Bridson

is capable of registering under 13m for half a mile, and some idea of the ease with which he swam may be gathered when it is known that his time for the distance last night was 14m 33 3-ss. (The New Zealand record for the distance is 11m 25 3-ss, by D. P. Lindsay, and the Auckland record is 11m 59 2-ss, by A. E. Baird.) A splendid performance was that of Miss Ena Stockley in the 50yds ladies' scratch race. Miss Stockley and Miss P. Robertson raced together until the last few yards, in which the former -drew an inch or twb ahead, to win in 28 2-ss, a time which is 3-5s better* than the Australian record for the distance. Although she did not swim into a place, Miss Stockley was also well up at the finish of th«» 100yd9 ladies' cup handicap, for the Fuller Cup. ■ Some good racing was produced in the classes for younger swimmers, who were catered for with five events—one each of 33 l-3yds for boys and girls, one each of 50yds and a novice handicap of 50yds. There were two sprint even's for men —the 50yds interclub handicap and the 100 yds first-class invitation handicap. Other racing events were the 100 yds breaststroke handicap, the 133 l-3yds business houses' championship relay and the 66 2-3 yds dual relay for the Pascoe C'up, won by Miss M. Farquhar and J. Enwright. Besides the men's open diving and the long dive (which was staged in place of a corfu), ther<? was an entertaining exhibition of trick and fancy diving by the Ponsonby troupe. The programme was complete with a water polo matrh between the two unbeaten teams, Mount Eden and Waitemata A. Waitemata, champions for the last two years, were beaten by two goals to one.

Bridson (Grammar), 1 : R. de Loree (Mount Eden). 2; R. Ashby (Waitemata), 3. Also started" E. V. Cunnold (Waitemata). Bridson took the lead at once, but De Loree vas with him at the end of the second length. The pair made the pace too fast for the other two competitors, and had a rood half length on them at the end of 200 yards. Brideon was moving through

the water easily, but De Loree appeared to be making hard work of it, and was a yard behind Bridson at 300 yards. \V hen the quarter mile had been covered Bridson and De Loree had left Cunnold and Ash by a length behind, and their own positions were unchanged. It was obvious that Bridson was confident of victory, for, besides taking it unusually easy, he was unexpectedly slow at the turns, appearing to wait for De Loree. When Bridson saw he had the race well in hand he let De Loree set the pace and kept just a comfortable distance ahead, eventually winning by a yard. Ashby and Cunnold were two lengths behind. Long Dive. —L. Fairgray, 1. Water Polo. —Mount Eden, 2 goalo; Waitemata A, 1. TECHNICAL COLLEGE WINNERS
