Commonwealth To Aid Antarctic Expedition. N.Z. ASKED TO CO-OPERATE. CANBERRA, February 21. The Commonwealth Government has decided to organise and equip an expedition to the Antarctic to be led bv Sir Douglas Maw-mi at the end of this vear. The Prime Minister. Mr. Bruce, says the New Zealand Covernment has be.'.i invited to co-operate in the expedition, and he earnestly hoped it would do so. by providing representatives in tlr.' scientific personnel. The expedition would cost illti.OOO, toward which til * New Zealand Government had offered to contribute J12,~>00.
BRITAIN HELPS.
Discovery At Disposal Of Explorer. FAMOUS BARQUE. (British Official Wireless.) (Received 12 noon.) RL'GBY, February 21. The famous ship Discovery has been placed at the disposal of Sir Douglas Mawson by the British Government for the Antarctic expedition, which lie is to lead. This three-masted auxiliary barque was used by Captain Scott for his first Antarctic expedition. Mawson's expedition, which the Australian Commonwealth Covernment is equipping, and which a luunt.er oi British scientists have been invit-d to join, will leave Hobart, Tasmania, at the beginning of the next Australian summer. Sir Douglas Mawson arrived in London from Australia ten days ago in the hope of acquiring the Discover.!.
