Commonwealth To Aid Antarctic Expedition. N.Z. ASKED TO CO-OPERATE. CANBERRA, February 21. The Commonwealth Government has decided to organise and equip an expedition to the Antarctic to be led bv Sir Douglas Maw-mi at the end of this vear. The Prime Minister. Mr. Bruce, says the New Zealand Covernment has be.'.i invited to co-operate in the expedition, and he earnestly hoped it would do so. by providing representatives in tlr.' scientific personnel. The expedition would cost illti.OOO, toward which til * New Zealand Government had offered to contribute J12,~>00.

The famous ship Discovery has been placed at the disposal of Sir Douglas Mawson by the British Government for the Antarctic expedition, which lie is to lead. This three-masted auxiliary barque was used by Captain Scott for his first Antarctic expedition. Mawson's expedition, which the Australian Commonwealth Covernment is equipping, and which a luunt.er oi British scientists have been invit-d to join, will leave Hobart, Tasmania, at the beginning of the next Australian summer. Sir Douglas Mawson arrived in London from Australia ten days ago in the hope of acquiring the Discover.!.
