THE WORLD of SPORT

SWIMMING.

TWO MORE CARNIVALS HELD.

VISIT OP J. W. CAMERON.

MISS ROBERTSON'S RECORD.

the championship stage of the f<Sason over interclub competition is again in full swing, for during the past week two carnivals have been held, one at Itclensville by the local club, and the otiher by the Waitemata Club in the Tepid Baths. ,A large party of Auckland swimmers journeyed to Helensville last Saturday tc» participate in the annual river race iii the afternoon and the gala in the

cveniug. The river race was a good contest, and attracted 32 starters, the majority ot whom were Aucklanders. The caption of the Parnell Club, W. Wilson (ilOs), proved the winner, while the Auckland lady middle-distance champion, Miss Dorothy Grant, on the same Tuftrk, linished!; second 5s later. The Olympic representative, D. P. Lindsay (scr), was in good form, winning the gold medal for fastest time, 12m 355. It* is safe to say that, with better luck, tlie only two lady Competitors, Miss Grant and Miss Edna Champion, would have tilled the first two places. When about half the distance had been completed, Miss Champion was leading easily, but then she veered right off her coiirse, and so lost a great deal of ground. She subsequently finished in sixth place, after having swum about 80yds too much. Owing to a misunderstanding concerning her handicap, Gfant, who was supposed to be on the IlOs mark, was about 12s late in leaving the starting point. Considering that Wilson, also on 110s, beat her by only 55,. Miss Grant s chances of success would have been very favourable had she started at the right time. In the' evening -there was a large attendance at the held in the ladies' municipal baths, tfhicb ' are 18 2-3 yds long and about Byds wide. Additional interest was attached to the 100 yds invitation handicap, - because of the appearance of the New Zealand sprint champion and record-holder, I. W. Cameron, of Wellington. Cameron, who was on ecratch,.ha<l. aa.iiß opponents D_ P. Lindsay J. ,P. Farrell 2£s), and R. Sellars (4s)*••• After a fine Taee Sellarsi, who no doubt was more accustomed to'fcwimming in the warm mineral Water, w<?n by 2ydsrfrom the*, good time of 60s. lindsay finished -in third position, while Farrell was about 2yds fufther back. Cameron's swimming was a revelation to the Helens tflle people, aa "h« w--easily the fastest sprinter they have ever seen in action.

The Helens ville Club ia one of the most enthusiastic of clubs, and it is therefore little wonder that some of its younger members promise to make a name for themselves in the sport. As is well known, Ross Sellars, who was third in this "jaitars- 100 yds Auckland championship, Owes his success to the encouragement he has received from the club. He is only 19 years of age, so that he should improve still further. The best of many promising youngsters are Jack Sellars, Trevor Strong, who represented Auckland in junior events at the national championships, and Miss Eileen Hill, an intermediate girl. Miss Hill is said to be eager to do well, and when & few-improvements are effected in her etyle she should be prominent in intermediate event* next season.

Cameron at tepid baths. The large attendance of spectators at the Tepid Baths last Tuesday evening must have been delighted with the great swimming of the youthful New Zealand champion. He was warmly applauded after he had touched ahead of the local men in the 100 yds first class invitation handicap in the splendid time of 55 4-ss, equalling hia own record, which" he put up in winning the Dominion championship a few weeks ago. Cameron's swimming ia characterised by a -high body position, for he planes out of the water to his waist; hia shoulders do not dip, and offer no resistance to the water. He has a beautiful starting plunge, which could well be emulated by local swimmers. A noticeable feature of his swimming on Tuesday night was that he did not empl«f the under-water turn, universally considered to be more advantageous than turning above water. Cameron, however, has such a powerful push-off that at the turn he gains -at least half a yard on his rivals. By reason of her brilliant performance in equalling Miss Una Stockley's record of 66 3-5s for senior ladies, the New Zealand intermediate champion, Miss Peggy Robertson, must be regarded as the wonder girl swimmer of New Zealand. ' 2s she is yet only 16 years of age, she should clip seconds off her time, nor would it come as a surprise if she eventually putte up world's records, not only for 100 yds, but also for longer distances. There is no reason why Miss Robertson should not make her way into the front rank of the world's lady swimmers. In her New Zealand has a potential world's champion. The 130yda breaatstroke handicap -was marked by the success of the New Zealand intermediate boy and girl champions, J. Magee and Mis* Jean Thomson, who finished in t>eegud places.. Miss Thomson, with-* handica p of 16s, was "beat, the winner, T. Low<* disqualified for not turninp'Sgjpfc- both hands.
