SALE OF MOTOR CARS.
CHARGE OF SUNDAY TRADING,
i POLICEMAN TAKEN" FOR RIDE,
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
! CHRISTCHURCH, this day. A charge of exposing motor cars for sale on a Sunday was brought in the Magistrate's Court yesterday against the firm of Adams, Ltd. Two salesmen were charged with working at their trade or calling on a Sunday. On the strength of an advertisement that second-hand cars were for sale at Adams, Limited, and that the garage would be open on Sunday morning from 9 until 12 o'clock, it was stated, two policemen went to investigate the matter. They discussed the merits of the cars with a salesman, and were taken for a ride. The other salesman was showing one of the cars to another prospective buyer.
Sub-Inspector Fitzpatrick eaid that •when he went to the garage himself the salesmen offered to take him out in one of the ears, but ho told them it was Sunday and disclosed his identity. Tho magistrate, Mr. E. D. Mosley, said the position of charging the salesmen as well as the firm was a curious one. There was nothing against the salesmeit if they were employed in a garage, and the evidence showed that they were. The Act exempted people employed in a motor garage from the restrictions on Sunday trading.
Stating that tlie matter affected garages throughout the Doniin' >11, the magistrate said it was a quest ,n that Heeded looking into, and he would Reserve his decision.
