PRISONERS SENTENCED.

OFFENCES IN INVERCARGILL.

'DOWN HILL THROUGH DRINK."

INVERCARGILL, this day.

In the Supreme Court to-day, before Mr. Justice MacGregor, five prisoners were sentenced. Leslie Allen Brewer, for breaking, entering and theft, was ordered to pay costs of the prosecution, take out a prohibition order, and come up for sentence within the next two years. James Ena Yeads Spiers and Henry Harley McNally, for issuing valueless cheques, received sentences of twelve months' imprisonment. His Honor, commenting on the ease, said that they were equally guilty and should be equally punished. Frank Auld, aged 28, on a charge of carnal knowledge, was sentenced to 18 monthe , hard labour. James Barton, for carnal knowledge and indecent assault, received a sentence of two years for reformative purposes. "This man is going down hill through drink," commented his Honor. The Court adjourned for a short while in memory of the late Chief Justice.
