AUCKLAND IMPORTS LESS

DROP IN* JANUARY FIFUKES.

Auckland's easing up on the heavy importations from overseas is reflected in the whipping returns of the Auckland Harbour Board. In his report for January, submitted to the board to-day, the harbourmaster (Captain H. H. Sergeant) stated that the arrivals totalled 097 vessels, of which 630 were local boat*, the gross tonnage being 397.311. Compared with the figures for the previous January they showed a decrease of right vessels, totalling 29,893 tons gross. The Manukau shipping, according to Captain R. H. Ciibbons' report, showed an increase in numbers for the month, fhe figures being 28 vessels totalling 11,916 tons gross compared with 26 vessels of a total gross tonnage of 15,821.

In his report on the import cargo operations during the past month the traffic manager (Mr W. R. Oolden) showed that the total was 54..">68 tons, compared with 93.907 tons for the same month last year, a decrease of just over 9000 tons, while the total was lower by 5557 tons compared with December returns.
