THIRD RACE UNDECIDED.

TIME LIMIT EXCEEDED

AVALOXS GREAT RECOVERY

(By Telegraph.— Special to " Star.")

AKAROA, Saturday

Owing to the fart that the time limit was exceeded, the third race for the •Sanders Cup held to-day is to be retailed. A feature of the 'race w,« the fine recovery made by the Auckland boat, Avalon, which started last but finished first. The wind was verv light from the north. All boats carried their lightest crews. ° The times or rounding the first mark were: Colleen, llh (>m .>os; Eileen 11 !i ™" t ss; Cl - Vde ' llh 9m ' Avalon, llh 29m 20s; Murihiku, llh 3om. Colleen, Eileen and Clvde set leading jibs, with spinnakers we'll forward, and made good time back towards the starting line, while Murihiku and Avalon were becalmed fully a mile from the mark. i After running back for nearly half the distance to the home mark the lead-j ing boats l.wt the wind, but not for, long, as a light air now came away from j the east, and they slowly moved ahead' and Murihiku now felt the new j breeze, and set spinnakers for the first . mark, but it was slow work. 11.-0 am , with one hour of the time limit the chances of finishing seemed j poor.

Avalon continued to pain on the three leaders, while Clyde. Colleen and Eileen were making short tacks into each bank and clo&e along shore.

Avalon drew up level with the leaders amidst great excitement, and was within a length or two of the leading boat. Clyde, after being nearly 24m behind.

The first round wa> completed at: Clyde. T2h 2Sm oos; Avalon. 12h "'.> in 10s; Colleen. 12h olm 20s; Eileen 12h ;J4m; Murihiku. 12h .">4m.

Avalon soon passed Clyde on the run, and was the leading boat at 12.00 p.m., but. with exactly oOm to go to the limit, and only half the course sailed, it looked hopeless.

At 12.4(i a steady breeze from the south-west set in, and all moved off with some life.

Seven Minutes Ahead

All stuck to it gamely in the hope of finishing in time, but the wind was too light.

Avalon fetched the weather mark for the second time at lhr 20m Is. and set her spinnaker smartly on the two miles and a-quarter to the finish, but the time expired at 1.20* p.m. before Clyde reached the mark, with Avalon seven minutes ahead of everything.
