COMFORT INSTEAD Or GRIME.—This week saw he running of the first electric train between Lyttelton and Christchurch. True, the system failed when the first train full of important people was in the middle of the tunnel, and two of the despised "puffing billies" had to be requisitioned to tow the train out, but that was merely an accident, and ail who have, in the past, suffered the smoky, choky, grimy three-mile ride under the old style, will warmly welcome the electrification of the line. Lyttelton is the second New Zealand tunnel to be electrified the first being Otira.
