PRAYED IN DOCK.
MAN'S WIFE FOUND IN WATER BUTT. Immediately he entered the dock at Carmarthen County Police Court, Henry Davies (59). a market gardener, who was charged with the wilful murder of his wife, engaged in deep prayer for a few minutes. He then faced the Bench with an appearance of relief. The body of his wife, Margaret Davies (58), was found in a water butt at the rear of tnelr liome In Abergwili. Some surprise was caused when Mr. Daniel Johns, defending, said he was instructed to say that Davies felt very aggrieved and complained of the way in which the inquest proceedings had been conducted. "Personally I do not know what happened there," said counsel, "but I have seen Press reports of the proceedings, and if they are correct, I must say Davies has some grounds for complaint. I am sure it is not necessary to ask your Worship, or those of you who have read the reports, that you will disregard them entirely." Mr. Johns said the report had been widely read and nad created a good deal of prejudice in the public mind. "I mention this," he concluded, "in fairness to Davies, who desires to make an emphatic protest against the way the inquest proceedings were carried on." Superintendent Morgan said the prosecution was not ready to proceed, and the Bench granted his application for a remand iu custody until January 7
