SEWERAGE DISCHARGE.
WHANGAREI OUTFAIX SCHEME
EXGDTEER TO REPORT.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
WHAXGAREI, this day. The question as to whether sewerage discharge would interfere with the river channel was discussed by the Whangarei Harbour Board to-day, when the borough applied for the board's approval with respect to the treatment and discharge of sewage above the present location at Limebumer's Creek.
The Borough Council wrote that the outfall sewer from the septic tanks to the channel would be laid at a depth of 6ft below the mud level and that treatment works would consist of a. septic and storage tank. The latter would hoi tdhe elHuent when the tide was coming in. The effluent would not be crude sewage, but septic tank effluent, which would practically be clear, as it would be diluted on discharge with an unlimited quantity of salt water. No better or safer method of purification could be devised, and the medical officer of health had given his approval of the scheme.
Mr. J. E. Holmes thought that the board should be convenienced. There was no likelihood of the affection of the channel by sewage, especially as it would be widened before final approval was given. Mr. R. G. Hosking pointed out that the Harbour Board might be faced with the same difficulty as had arisen at Orakei. The engineer was instructed to report on the matter to the next meeting of the board.
