Usually mile saddle races attract big fields but it is the exception next Saturday at Otahuhu where only seven have been accepted tor. The class, 2.17, it might have been thought, would have drawn a solid acceptance. Many of the candidates engaged at Otahuhu are racing at the Wellington meeting this afternoon. Their form at the Hutt will give a line as to their prospects next Saturday. The acceptances received yesterday for the first day of the Otahuhu Trotting Club's meeting are particularly good, aud with the exception of the 4.36 two inileß the fields are solid. The Otahuhu Olub appears to be well set to experience a successful meeting. The holding of the Waikato meeting three days after the Otahuhu fixture is going to greatly benefit the country club. The nominations closed yesterday, and from the list it will be seen that they are substantial. In the Waikato Cup no less than 25 have been nominated, and they include many from the South.

Wrackler will be at a very cramped price in the Papakura Handicap next Saturday. The three-year-old has only five opponents to dispose of, and they are not a brilliant quintet, and Wrackler should not experience a great deal of difficulty in picking up the thick end of the stake.

Nelson McCormack is going along well in his work, and this morning he showed plenty of pace when working with The Shrew and Nelson Tasker. Nelson McCormack is not a good stayer, and sprint journeys will always be to his advantage. He will keep those in the mile saddle busy on Saturday next.

Kolfe Audubon is bound to be one of the fancied ones in the Tamaki Handicap next Saturday, in which he is on the limit. The colt won well at the last Waikato meeting, and he has been kept going by A. Julian ever since. The opposition in the Tamaki Handicap will be much better than he downed at Claudelands, and he is not going to find it easy to win this time.

An acceptance of fifteen for the Otahuhu Cup is ample, and one or two less could have been received and then there would have been a good field. The general opinion is that Glideaway is the most likely one to land the good stake, and on her win in the Dunedin Cup at Forbury the Australian-bred mare must have an undeniably good chance. Tomkin son has also Logan Park in the race, and this pacer is a particularly good one it will be recognised that the Christchurch trainer has two strong candidates. MR. J. ROWE. LIFE MEMBER OF A.R.C. In the world of sport in the Dominion there are many men who have done much to place racing and trotting on the high plane occupied to-day, but no man has worked harder and more continuously than Mr. John Rowe, president of the Auckland Trotting Club. Mr. Rowe is more widely recognised as connected with trotting—in fact, he is regarded as one of the fathers of that particular sport—but he nas also done innumerable good and worked hard in the interests of the galloping sport, so much so that the committee of the Auckland Racing Club i have paid him the high compliment of' making him a life member of the A.R.C.
