DRAINAGE EXTENSIONS.

DEVELOPMENTS AT AVONDALE

Proposals for the expenditure of a sum of £100,000 on a programme of drainage works were before the Auckland City Council last evening, when the Finance Committee recommended that application be made to the Local Bodies' Loans Board for the necessary authority to raise the money, before taking a poll of ratepayers. The recommendation was adopted.

In a report, the city engineer, Mr. W. E. Bush, stated £7050 was in credit from the old loan, 'but works in hand would mean an expenditure of £4000.

Mr. Bush said he had prepared an estimate of cost of a drainage scheme of Avondale, which would involve £264,500, to which an addition would have to be made for engineering contingencies and the costs incidental to the raising of the loan. The council's liability in connection with drainage was likely to be fairly heavy, Mr. Bush stated, because a large portion of the Tamaki district still required attention.

As a first instalment of the drainage extensions Mr. Bush suggested the best course was to decide upon the expenditure of, say £100,000, for which he could prepare estimates. The course of d envelopment could be watched and sewers could be provided in order of urgency.

Proposed works estimated to cost £86,646 were set out in a report prepared by the acting-city engineer, Mr. J. Tyler, while Mr. Bush was absent in Australia. The major portion of the amount, £61,000, was for the extension of the main sewer at Avondale and certain reticulation works in that district.
