MOTOR REGULATIONS.
From the discussions at the meeting of the North Island Motor Union yesterday, it is evident that some authoritative pronouncement is required regarding the possible or actual conflict between local by-laws and the regulations based on the Motor Vehicles Act. It seems that neither motorists nor Departmental officials are certain whether by-laws restricting speed or otherwise controlling traffic are valid or not if they conflict in any way with the regulations. In the public interest, and more especially in view of the constant demand for a higher speed limit both in the towns and the country districts, it ; s surely desirable that any existing doubt or difference of opinion on this question should be settled authoritatively without delay.
