AMATEUR ATHLETICS.

AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS.

CARLAW PARK TO-MORROW.

ALL LOCAL CRACKS ENGAGED

Carlaw Park will be the rendezvous of the Auckland Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association to-morrow, when the eighth provincial championship meeting will be held, and, with fine weather prevailing, the sport appears sure to be of a high standard. Nominations received by the centre were not numerically strong, but, with the cream of Auckland's athletes competing, keen competition appear? certain.. Athletes undoubtedly will exert themselves to the utmost to-morrow, as it is understood the team to represent Auckland will be chosen after the final event has been decided.

Both the 100 yards and 220 yards championships appear certain to provide fine finishes. The present dual holder (A. J. Elliott) looks a winner again, but the opposition this year is much stronger than he met last season. On Monday night, at the Technical Old Boys' meeting, he put up a brilliant performance in winning the 220 yards after stumbling badly at the start. At the 150 yards mark he appeared to be in an impossible position, but, finishing with great deermination, he gathered in the two leader?, and was going away at the tape.

L. H. Meredith has been putting up some brilliant performances this season, but the injury to his ankle sustained last week may prove detrimental to his chances.

T. K. Cambie created a surprise by gaining two very easy victories in the 100 yards and 220 yards handicaps at a meeting held in the Domain recently but he will find it a different proposition to-morrow. He should fill a place in one of the sprint championships, but. summed up, it looks ae if Elliott will retain both of his titles, with Meredith and Cambie the hardest to beat.

It was very disappointing to see T. Henry badly strain a muscle in his leg last Monday evening, an he appeared hkely to gain a victory in the quarter to-morrow and to represent Auckland at the New Zealand championships to be held the following week. It is practically certain that he will not compete tq-mor-row, although there may be a chance of his racing at Wellington. With Henry ou *. C. Olsen appears a likely winner, although his best performances have been registered over half a mile. It will be remembered that last year, after finishing second in the New Zealand 880 yards championship, he came out the following week to run a great race into second place behind C. Stuart in the Australasian championships. He was interfered with twice during the journey, so that there does not appear to be anyone to trouble him in the half The present holder (J. 8. Watt) is down to defend his title, but he ha? not done enough running to be in hie best form. In the one and three miles championships, J. W. Savidan should have two very easy runs, as he is undoubtedly a class above the other competitors. The ex-Wanganui champion field exponent (K. Elliott) will be seen in action to-morrow. Elliott is a fine big stamp of a man, and, with the training he has been having of late in the Domain, should extend the Auckland champion, J. W. Shirley, in the discus championship at the least. P. Nesdale, the present holder of the 440 yards hurdles championship, again appears a winner, his most dangerous opponent being D. Kerr-Taylor, who na? been showing good form of late over the sticks.

Handicaps for non-championship events have been declared as follows:— 50yds- a n it BBra»», a»»- «y««: O. Wilkin f eM^StiiMS^ 5 Alf - c,ark ' 12< * ds; sc ? a, £ m T le Cy c l P Handicap.--H. G.
