DUNEDH JOCKEY CLUB.

NIGHTMARCH IIFTS CUP. SECOND LEO TO RIV TIX TTX. PINK NOTE AND AUSSIE SECONDS. (By Telegraph.—Special to " Star.") DUNEDT.V, Thursday. Under a dull sky the Dunedin Jockey Club's meeting was opened to-day. The racing was splendid throughout, but defeats into second ri.ico of Aussie in <he the Cup wore costly to punters. After the big sprint Limerick appeared on the course and covered six furlongs with a lightweight (A. E. Eastwood) up. He did the first furlong in 14s, and the times as he passed the other furlong posts were 26 2-ss, 33s and 52 3-ss. Hewas travelling within himself at the finish. Limerick is cherry ripe for his encounter with Aussie and other good milers in the James Hazlett Memorial Gold Cup on Saturday. Tho track was in excellent order, and the racing was interesting throughout. There was a large attendance of the public and the totalisator handled £25,755. compared with £23.808 10/ on the first day last year. The Hurdlers. Only Troilus was scratched for the Autumn Hurdles and in a good betting race Gayoma was elected a little l>etter favourite than Lancer. Amori«t set off at a great pace, and along the back it seemed that he would not be caught, but a bad jump five furlongs from home took the sting out of him, and another hit a furlong further on gave him another knock back. Tunamoe. and Lancer, who were handiest, closed on Amorist. Tunamoe shot away on the flat, but Lancer tackled him and won by two lengths, with Amorist a length and a half away Amorist would have won but for her faulty jumps towards the finish. Lancer was nlwnp goin~ well. Tunamoe just lacked finish. Rantratalii seemed to be jumping warily. She was never reallv dangerous. Gayoma finished last, and her performance wag too bad to be true.

Short Priced Victor. Paquito was backed to a short price for tho Trial Stakes, and although he was running in the middle division, with four furlongs to go the son of Thurnham —Madrid worked his way into a good position and joined the leaders at the turn for home. Then ensued a battle between Paquito, Starshooter and Rigmarole, and they finished in that order. Membo ran a poor fourth after being well placed. Paqnito w;is too good, but Starshooter will find tlie race beneficial. A Sterling Finish. The President's Handicap provided the best finish of the day. while throughout the race Mas interesting. Towai was supported heavily, lmt after getting away well Red Rneer and an outsider in Royal Flower set a solid pace right to the straight entrance, where Tardy and .Amor were, hntu'w Amor enme "awav on the outside and Tanfv on the mi's challenged. They were fighting out the finish when Tembroney came ag.iin. Amor lasted 'on;* enough tc Ivat him !.v ii neck, with Tardy a head away. Rovnl Flower, an improving filly, was fourth, while (ireen Cloth. Evening and Red Racer a1«o stayed on well. Aussie Meets With Trouble. The Auckland champion. Aussie, was rightly elected a strong order for the Publicans' Handicap, but after meeting

with trouble going 011 the journey, he had to take second place to that smart three-year-old, Rin Tin Tin. Although he drew Xo. 2 position at the barrier. Aussie was chopped out, and when the field was settled on its journey he was lying in the middle division. At the far turn he met with bad interference, and had to go on the outside. He was quickly on the rails again, and at the straight entrance looked to have a good chance of catching Rin Tin Tin and Silver Coot. The latter was first to go, but the Southland gelding drew away over the last 100 yard*, to win fairlv comfortably. Rin Tin Tin showed good form as a two-year-old, and also at the Christmas meeting here. Favoured with a good jump-out, he was never headed. Money Mine travelled fast over tinfinal furlong to catch third monev. Black Duke will l>e improved by the outing. Sudden Storm. Meadow Lark and Dancing Days ran poorly after having every chance, while Paperchase was doing welT at the business end. Derby Winner's Cup. An exceptionally fine win through sheer staying powers and determination was scored by the Derby winner, Nightmarch, in the Dunedin Cup, beating Pink Note, from whom he was in receipt of three years and 61b. It was a splendid race, and the easy manner in which Nightmareh beat his field was evidenrv that he is a colt of brilliance. Getting away well, he allowed Circulation 10 onen up a gap and then steady herself. With four furlongs gone Nightmareh was two lengths behind the marc, with Royal Saxon and Beau Geste next. Emerson then checked the colt, and allowed Pink Note and Papatu to head uff the others before making a move forward at the straight entrance. At

the distance post Nightraarch caught ; Pink Note, and went on to win ea-sily by three lengths from the warm favourite, with Papatu a similar distance away. Neither of the minor place-lillera had a chance with Nightmarch. Papatu went a, good race, however. Circulation ran excellently for ten furlongs, but Royal Saxon gave indisputable evidence of his inability to stay over a mile and a-quaiter. Rotor was never dangerous, and Prickles was not prominent at any stage. Count Cavour showed up at no stage, while Beau Geste found the journey too tiring. The Juveniles. Elected a good favourite, the Hunting Song—Reel Edna two year-old Piuk Coat justified support by outclassing the two-year-olds in the Champagne Stakes. Quick out of the barrier, he was fir.-<t away, and never looked like being headed. He beat Stealth by three lengths, with Gold Tinge seven lengths away. He was too classy. Stealth did not stay on aa well as expected, while Gold Tinge again disappointed. The Australian winner was beaten with half a mile gone. This was Pink Coat's second start and second success. After his win at Oamaru he was sold privately by Mr. J. M. Samson to Mr. J. Morrison for a thousand guineas. The cult looks as if he will be dangerous over classic distances next year. The Final Events. Another easy win was scored in the Berwick Handicap by Waving Corn, who waited behind the leaders till the straight was reached, and then drew away to win fairly easily by two lengths from Impertinence, who was always at the head of affairs. Considering her soreness. Killorna ran well into third place. Cupid's Dart was going well when ehe stumbled, and Sweet Refrain was chopped right out ; the closelybunched field turned for home. Star Raid tired over the last furlong, and Court Jester ran poorly. There was a good poo for the last event, the Stewards' Handicap, and Full Feather was installed favourite. Passing the six-furlong peg, Flying Mist joined Pangolin and Camisader in the van, with Full Feather and Overhaul handy. Flying Mist led Pangolin and Full Feather home by a head, with the fast-finishing Waterlow half a length away. Arrowy was knocked back going up the hill. Pangolin repeated hie Wellington form by dropping out once he straightened for home. Full Feather galloped a little more generously than usual over the early stages, and Vhe will probably be all the better for the race. Overhaul was not ready for a mile.
