MAIN HIGHWAYS.
TOUR OF BOARD.
VISIT TO CAMBRIDGE.
(By Telegraph—Own Correspondent.)
CAMBRIDGE, Wednesday.
Tlie Main Highways Board representatives, with Mr. A. E. Jull as actingchairman, in continuation of the tour through the South Auckland districts, met the Borough Council here this morning. The Mayor (Mr. T. F. Richards), after welcoming tlie representatives, said the council had consented to raise a loan of £15,001) for tar-sealing the highway through the borough, but they had waited, hoping that money would become cheaper, as they did not want to unduly raise the rates. The Mayor referred to the unsatisfactory state of the Karapiro Bridge in the borough and on the main highway to Rotorua. It was only a one-way bridge and badly needed strengthening. They were hoping to get a four-to-one subsidy. Mr. Jull replied that if the work was approved, the board would be prepared to give a two-to-one subsidy. In reply to ilr. Wells, Mr. Jull said tlie board could not subsidise work done on highways before the board operated. Mr. Jull promised to consider all requests preferred.
