TRAFFIC OUTLETS.

CONVIRSION OF RAILWAY SUGGESTED.

(To the Editor.)

The ever-increasing congestion of traffic on the city streets is causing the City Council to look for new outlets, and now that the rail waT deviation via Tamaki is nearing completion the time scans opi»ortune to call attention to what appears to be a solution of the problem so f* r as concerns the southern and western-bound traflic. When the deviation is put into commission ,he great bulk of the railway traffl, will he transferred from the present" d 0,.11 track, and with the construction of the Morn, ngj.de dev.ation there will onlv be left the local traflic ln tween Auckland and We*t field on the present track. This traffic could easily be carried through The old single-track I arnell tunnel and the present double- ract ai.d tu.»,l converted to a concrete roadwav which would give an admirable outlet for ah southern and western-bound motor traffic from the lower part of the city into xi™ a avoiding the steep ~„11 Sv.nonds Street 0 r I arnell and affording an ea-y grade and q ui< . k transit from the city. There does not a ! to be any engineering diflicnlty which cinm* be overcome. and it should be within S bounds of practical politics" f or the C.tv Council and the Railway Department to come to satisfactory terms. Sueli a road as I gest, commencing at o r near the entrance to the new railway station, or even as far back . the crossing near the old station and with the Manuka 11 Road near the old Junction Hotel, would relieve the congested traffic in Queen Street Symonds Street and other streets and relieve the Grafto;, Bridge bv deviating all south and west-bound traffic from the l<Aver part of the citv.
