Found guilty, with a recommendation to mercy, oil a. charge of having assaulted a patient at the l'orirua Mental Hospital, Henry Dixoti Tyrer, a former attendant at the ln-titution, was sentenced by Mr. .lu-ii<e Jlerdman in the Supreme Court, to-day to 12 months' imprisonment with hard labour, to be followed by a period of reformative detention not exceeding 12 months. »Tyrer, who stood two trials in the Siipivnio Court, the fir>t jury having failed to aurce. was charged with having, with intent to do grievous bodily harm. caused actual bodily harm to one of the patients. Alternatively be was charged with assault m> as to can-e actual bodily harm. v. iili striking, wounding, or llltreuling a menliil defective while noting as an attendant.
