Ringleaders Sentenced To

Long Terms. THREE YEARS MAXIMUM. (Received 11 a.m.) SYDNEY, this day. A Rahaul message states that tht. ringleaders in the recent native strike have heen sentenced. Twenty-one defendants received the maximum penalty of three years' imprisonment, and six others from 30 to 31 months' imprisonment with hard ' labour on charges of conspiring to desert the landing and police services.

Tlio outbreak occurred on January 4. when between 3000 and 4000 contract labourers from the town and adjoining plantations mutinied when they were warned by a Roman Catholic missionary that they would be punished for desertion. The ringleaders declared that in that event the blood of blacks and whites would flow together. The message added that the mutineers were joined by desperadoes and murderers released from the prisons by the native police, who also mutinied. The position was f?rave, but hasty measures were taken for the protection of the whites and the mutiny was quelled.
