ROADS IN WANGANUI.

RACING THE RAINY SEASON. BOARD AND COUNCILS ACTIVE. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) " WANGANUI, this day. There is considerable activity on the Pfirapara Road at present with the operations of the Highways Board, Public Works Department and the county councils interested in the Wanganui County. The council is sending up its crusher to supply metal for three-quarters of a mile of uncompleted roadway in the county, and also sufficient metal to cover two miles further %n for the Highways Board at a point about 42 miles from Wanganui.

The Public Works Department is busy erecting a bridge across the Maiigawhero to bring metal over the river about a mile above the junction of the Matahiwi with the Parapara. Metal will be obtained from O'Neill's pit and here the contractors (Messrs. Spencer, of Takapuna) have their lorries on the job. Further up towards Raetihi Mr. Sturzaker, of Wanganui, is also carrying oat a metalling contract.

The proposal is to rush on the work as fast as possible, and there is every prospect of metalling sufficient to carry Vinter traffic being completed before the rainy season. The road will be of immense value to Wanganui, Baetihi, Ohakune, and back country settlers. It will also provide a direct tourist route to Taupo.
