VATICAN CITY.
NEW PAPAL STATE.
To Have Rights Of Independent
Sovereign Country.
APPLICATION OF CANON LAW
(Australian Press Assn.—United Service.)
(Received 12 noon.)
ROME, February 7
The Pope has telegraphed the Papal Nuncios, announcing that an agreement has been reached with the Italian Government, which is to be signed at the Lateran Palace on Sunday by Cardinal Gasparri, Secretary of State, and Signor Mussolini.
The new Papal State will be called the Vatican City and the Vatican will have the right to maintain a railway station, telegraph office, aerodrome, a wireless station, and will also be allowed to mint its own money, and issue its own bank notes and postage stamps. It will also have the other rights of an independent sovereign State.
Offences committed in the Vatican territory will be tried in the Italian Courts. The Italian Government has increased the money indemnity from one to two billion lire, of which one billion is payable immediately.
The application of the Canon Law is a new experiment that ha 3 never been tried in a modern State and the result will be watched with keen interest throughout the world.
