AT TRENTHAM.

NATIONAL RIFLE MEETING. THE TEAM FOR MELBOURNE. GOOD SCORES REGISTERED. (By Telegraph-—Press Association.) TRENTHAM, Thursday. Addressing the competitor* at the National Rifle Association meeting, which was opened at Trentham this morning, the president, Colonel F. B. Cresßwell, said there had been consider able comment respecting the team selected to go to Melbourne, some of the more notable marksmen of last year not having been included, and explained that the selectors took into consideration those who did well in the Gordon Highlander Cup competition against Australian teams last Marcn. Although this trophy was won !>y New Zealand, it wa* taken back bv the

Australians, and was competed for at Perth in August last. The competition was governed by service con-i it ions, and an endeavour was made to have it competed for at the Victoria Kill.: Associations meeting, but the Australian authority would not agree to two competitions within twelve months. The Government provides a subsidy of £2">o for the team to go to Australia, and an effort was being made to include a service series in Victoria under New Zealand conditions, which provides that slings and aperture sights be barred. In the rapid shooting practice, with targets exposed for 3.3 seconds, iotne. creditable scores were recorded, and a general improvement was shown in the snap-shooting and tile series. H. T. Boon (Karori) won the rapid practice with a score of 43. The event was won last year by W. P. Fulton (New Sou*h Wales) with 44. In the snap-shooting A. G. Devore (Akarana) was first with 85, and T. Soler (Wanganui) second with 82. Last year E. Ballinger (Petone), 73, was first, and Soler, 72, second. The average scores in tne service practices show a distinct advance over the previous years, it being noticeable that a considerable number of young mark • men have entered the various competitions.
