MOUNT COOK.

ANOTHER ASCENT MADE. A climb of extraordinary interest was made on Sunday, when no fewer than live amateur climbers. Miss Marie Rylcs. Mr. Syme and Mr. Mace, of Taranaki. and Mr. Turner and Mr. Cyril Turner, of Wellington, jind a Hermitage guide attained the summit of Mount Cook. This is the second time this giant of the Southern Alps lias been conquered this season, and for the second time this season a woman has made the ascent. On January ti. Miss Kate Gardiner, of Liverpool, was the successful mountaineer; this time Miss Bylcs, C.A.C.. of Australia, with Guide Alf. Brustad, has given this proof of endurance and mountain craft. Guide Brustad is a Norwegian ski expert. but he has a reputation also as a strong and reliable climber. He was the first man to cross to the Wist Coast this season when he accompanied Miss Aroha Clifford, of Christchurch, on the round trip early in December. Since ( hrisi mas Brustad lias dime Mount Kinsey, Mount Sea ley (JHtfft). and the Minarets, only being prevented bv bad weather' from mo'v extensive climbing from the Tasman Valley. Mr. Syme and Mr. Mace have alreadv some good alpine work to their credit. Recently they, in company with Mr. Murray, did the round trip over the ( opcland l'a<s and Graham's Saddle, and they put up something of a record on the return trip by travelling in one dav. and all on foot, from Alma lint. Franz Josef, to the Hermitage. doing the Minarets HO.Of.Sft) „lid Do laßeche (lO.OfiKftl on the wav. Mr. Samuel Turner. F.R.G.S.. ha« climbed Mount C ook four times before, and has the distinction of being the onlv man to have performed that feat alone. Mr. Cyril Turner accompanied his father in his ascent of Mount Hooker at the beginning of this season, and not long ago he did tlie Minarets. From the time of leaving the Haa-t Hut lill the return, the journey t,,ok twenty-five bonis. As is well known, compa of '.he travelling time- ~f elimbs is ..f little value, sine,, no two parties strike similar conditions. I he weather on Sunday wa< excellent but the condition of I In- .-now after the previous bad weather accounted for the long and arduous dav.
