ANXIOUS MOMENTS.

Captain Beaches Sinking Ship

Just In Time.

CREW ALERT FOR TWO DATS.

(Received 12 noon.)

SYDNEY, this day.

Buffeted by a heavy sea the Hunter River Company's steamer Allyn River, of 143 tons, sprang a leak off Colhtroy Beach. Her timbers-opened and the water pourcl into thfr hold. The pumps were manned but the inrush of water was too much for the crew. The captain, therefor?, beached the ship at Broken Bay with the water waist deep in the engine room. If it had risen another six inches the vessel would have probably plunged to the bottom.

The steamer Gosford went to her assistance and transhipped the deck cargo. The Gosford later towed the waterlogged steamer back to Sydney. From the time they boarded the AUyn River on Monday until they arrived back in Sydney late last night none of the crew had a wink of sleep.
