BOWLING.

TOURNAMENTS IN VIEW.

MATCHES IN HAMILTON TO-DAY.

FAREWELL TO AUSTRALIANS

(By TRUNDLER.)

In time-honoured fashion the bowlers are going to celebrate next Tuesday, the eighty-ninth anniversary of the foundation of New Zealand as a British colony, by holding a series of tournaments. In addition to several local functions there will be the usual popular tournament at Whangarei, and this year the Thames tournament is also being held on January 29, instead of in November. The local events, however, will be robbed of a good deal of their usual interest through the rink championship of the centre being commenced on that day, on the Remuera green, and it was also decided to commence on the same day the inter-section play in the Christmas tournament, postponed through bad weather. To minimise the clashing, the latter will commence on Saturday, ten rinks at Remuera and eight at Carlton, and the three rounds that day will eliminate half the competitors, enabling them to join in the rink championship or a tournament. Those who survive the three rounds will continue at Carlton on Anniversary Day. The draw will be arranged at a meeting of the centre executive to-morrow evening.

Yesterday 32 players left for Hamilton to play in the annual matches against the South Auckland Centre for the Hardley Shield. Two matches will be played, morning and afternoon, and the party are to return to-night. Their visit to Hamilton will apparently coincide with the viijit of the New South Wales bowlers, who are touring the North Island, for they were to motor from New Plymouth to Hamilton yesterday and leave there for Rotorua to-morrow, coming on to Auckland next Monday. Prior to leaving for Sydney ou the following Friday they will be entertained on various greens, the principal function being on Thursday* when they will be tendered an official farewell, match on the Auckland green, and this gathering will also be a farewell to Mr. James Pascoe, ex -president of the centre, who will accompany them to Sydney, en route to England. Mr. R. T. Harrison, the only Australian skip to qualify. in the Dominion rink championship, arrived in Auckland on Monday to spend a few days before returning home, and is being entertained on various greens during his stay. : As bowling critic fox the Sydney "Referee" he has been- largely respond ■ible for the publicity which was given, to the recent Dominion tournament,, resulting.ln such a large party coming over. Yesterday afternoon he was associated with the Auckland bowling critics in a friendly game on the Auckland green, when an enjoyable afternoon wa# spent. The sides chosen were: C. A. Allen, C. G. Maher, T. C. Sehnackenbeig, R. T. Harrison, v. J. M. Williams, S. Coldicutt, D. Campbell, A. J. Parker. Nobody took the game very seriously, but the visitor gave a beautiful exhibition of his skill and generally managed to keep the score a little ahead. _He has a stylish delivery, quite different from what is generally* understood as the orthodox Australian delivery, with a free swing which seems to give the bowl a pronounced top spin. This is specially noticeable in his remarkable driving, which attracted such attention in Wellington, for he gets far more pace into his drive than the swing would seem to indicate. Club Championships. Mount Albert are nearing the end of their championship play, with two two- \ lifers and 16 one-lifers. The good people of that club, however, must not base their calculations on the assumption that three rounds will find the winner, for it will take either five or six, according to who wins when the remaining two-lifer is drawn against » one-lifer.

Rawhiti are much nearer finding the winner, having reduced the competitor*, to three, all one-lifers. Their trouble is to know how to make the next draw, when A has already had a bye and hats already met B. All admit that A must not get the bye this time, but the question is whether his meeting with B and C should be drawn for, or whether he should play C without any draw being made. The question is Important, for if the latter course is taken it would definitely put B into the final, giving him a prize for certain, and the question is whether this is not too big an advantage to outweigh the other consideration of A and B having already met. Thei'e are no rules on the matter, unless clubs have their own local rules, but this unusual contingency supports the suggestion made a year or two ago that the automatic draw should be standardised as soon as there has been sufficient experience \o suggest the fairest course under every possible position. Further delving into the archives of the Carlton Bowling Club discloses the faet that Mr. A. R. Colt man was champion of that club in 1920-21 season. The champion of the previous year was Mr. A. C. Mclntyre, his pairs mate in so many successful tournaments.

Many bowlers have been calling upon Mr. C. F. Warren, the veteran Carlton skip, during his severe illness in hospital, but all will'be glad to know that he has now sufficiently recovered to return to his own home. ROTORUA TOURNAMENT. THE DRAW FOB SECTIONS.
