J AND J WINS THE CUP.

DISAPPOINTING RACE.

HOBO A LONG WAY BEHIND

The Masport Cup, the big race at the Motor Boat Club's regatta, was won by the Wanganui boat J and J. Contrary to expectations the race was disappointing. Miss Clevedon did not compete, owing to trouble with the clutch. This left the other Auckland boat to contest the race with the local boats. All got away with a flylug start, and Little Jim, showing a fine turn of speed, shot to the front, followed by Hobo, with J and J and One Step following.

Before a quarter of the first lap had gone J and J took the lead, and the crowd cheered vigorously. In the next lap J and J had increased her lead to 400 yards, and it was then evident that, barring mechanical trouble, the race would be won by Alderton Bros, and the cup retained. Hobo was running second and One Step was 200 yards away. One Step lost way after turning the buoy in magnificent style. Little Jim fell out after finishing the first lap. J and J then appeared to be taking matters quietly, and in the second lap was leading Hobo by about a quarter of a mile, One Step being half a mile behind Hobo. It then became evident that the race had resolved itself into a walk-over for J and J, and interest waned as each subsequent lap was completed. J and J increased her lead without effort and entered the last lap about a mile ahead of Hobo, and eventually won by nearly a mile and a-quarter. Hobo was second and One Step was well away, third.
