SWIMMING.

PARNELL CLUB'S GALA. BRIDSON'S PAST FURLONG. X.Z. EECORD BETTERED. Without halt or hitch, the Parnell Swimming Club officials put through a lengthy programme of 45 events at the Tepid Baths last night in a manner that kept the large attendance of spectators interested to the final item. Almost entirely a handicap programme, it evoked first-class swimming and some splendid finishes. The sensation of the evening came in the 220 yds handicap, the first heat of which was won off scratch by G. Bridson in 2m 28 3-ss, which is three seconds faster than the New Zealand record made by L. Kronfeld four years ago. Bridson did not compete in the final. The swim cannot count as an official record, being made in a handicap event, but next Monday the same swimmer will endeavour to beat the record at the Auckland Centre's championship gala. During the evening a surprise was sprung by the Mount Eden relay team, which defeated Waitemata, the holders, in the Tui Memorial relay race. The results were :—
