FRUIT FARMS AND VINERIES.

ALONG THE MURRAY RIVER, S. AUSTEALIAX DEVELOPMENT. "Much has been done in recent times to throw open the land for settlement in South Australia." commented Mr. C. Bischof, an Adelaide resident, who arrived by the Marama this morning, accompanied by his wife, on a holiday trip, which is to extend until Easter. "All along the Eiver Murray," he said, fruit farming and vine growing are going on, and there is an enormous area under cultivation. Irrigation schemes have been and are being carried out, and the population is increasing rapidly. There has been trouble, however, with some of the trades unions owing to the immigration of people from Southern Europe, and there has been much agitation against this influx, which has ceased for the time being.

"Our wheat yield," he continued, "has had a setback during the last two years, the drought, being , mainly responsible. The cities have shown ■much development during the last few years, and many large buildings have been erected. There is some dissatisfaction among the ing the bounty, but taken on the whole wine makers at the Government redueit has not seriously interfered with the industry, which is still in a flourishing condition."

Mr. Bischof is a keen fisherman, and made many inquiries in resrard to Russell and the big fishing that was so widely talked rtbout wherever he went He contemplates a vfsit to the northern waters, and also intends trying the rod at Taupo. "We have nothing like your sport in South Australia," he said.
