OVERSEAS MARKETS.
LONDON PRODUCE MARKET. The Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram, dated January 12, from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London:— Tallow.—No auction this week. Market quiet at last quotations. Hemp.—Manila prices higher on continued demand, and "J" grade sold for January-March shipment for £41. Stocks in Manila on December 31, 140,000 bales; in Great Britain, 16,397 bales. Sisal market firm with good trade demand. At the close there were buyers of No. 1 for JanuaryMarch shipment at £43, but no sellers. Good marks sold up to £43 10/ during this week. Closing value No. 2, £40 10/ to £41 5/. Mexican values for January-March shipment arei Special brush, £39; good white, £36. It is reported that prices are likely to advance soon. New Zealand: Market firm but quiet. Available supplies limited and prospects are good. Closing values for January-March shipment are:— Highpoints, £36 10/; fair, £34; common, £31 10/; tow No 2, £23 10/; No. 3, £19.
Apples.—Market very quiet. Present quotations are:—American, Spitzenberg, 10/6 to 12/ per case; Jonathan, 10/6 to 12/6; Stayman's Winesap, 11/ to 12/; Newton Pippin, 10/6 to 13/. Eggs.—Ex Port Darwin and Mataroa arrived in'good condition; selling slowly at 16/6 and 17/6 up; market quiet but steady. English, Dutch, Danish, French, and Irish, 15/ to 24/ per long 100; Belgian, South African, 16/ to 18/; Australian, 14/ to 15/; Chinese, Argentine, Polish and Russian, 11/6 to 13/6. Wool.—Bradford market firm but quiet. 50's prepared now quoted 2/5; others unchanged.
DAIRY PRODUCE. Amalgamated Dairies, Ltd., advise receipt of the following market report from their London manager, under date January 12, 1929: — Butter.—Anchor, 188/; unsalted, 196/. Market steady. General prices: Finest, 186/; first, 184/ to 185/; Danish, 194/ spot, 186/ f.o.b. Deliveries New Zealand 1781 tons, stock 3150 tons. Retail prices: Danish, reduced to 1/11; New Zealand, unchanged, 1/10. Cheese.—White, 94/ to 95/; coloured, 90/ to 97/. More business doing toward* end week after quiet spell. Canadian, November make, 98/ to 102/; matured, white, 110/; coloured, 108/ to 108/. Retail prices unchanged. The Bank of New Zealand has received the following advice irom its London office concerning the market at the close of business last week:— Butter.—Firm. 184/ to 188/ per cwt. Cheese.—Steadier. White, 93/ to 95/ per cwt; coloured, 95/ to 97/ per cwt. Frozen Meat.—The market is firmer for lighter weight wethers. The market for ewes is firm, but there is little business doing. There is a weaker tendency in lambs. There is a fair demand for beef. Wethers, light, 6ttd to 7ttd per lb; heavy, sfcd to 6%d; ewe*, 4%d to sfcd; lambs, twos, ll%d to 12d; eight*, ll%d to 12d; fours, ll%d to 12d; seconds, lOttd to 10% d; ox hinds, 4%d to 4%d; fores, 4d to 4%d; cow hinds, 3%d to *fcd; tore*, 3%d to 3%d.
