HIGHWAY OR SPEEDWAY?
CONCRETE ROADS ABUSED. HONORARY INSPECTORS SUGGESTED. NATIONAL POLICY NEEDED. Speaking of the Great North Road this morning, a prominent motorist remarked that the increasing number of accidents on all the main roads was appalling and something should be done to minimise them. He suggested that there should be honorary traffic officers appointed to all the suburbs and outlying districts who should be vested with the power of special traffic constables, with a view to bringing to book motorists who had no respect for speed regulations. "There are far too many men and women, too, at the wheel, who have been granted licenses long before they are proficient. People who are learning to drive should receive their instruction on unfrequented roads and not on popular highways. Many motorists are treating our line concrete roads as speedways. It is not in the public interest and a national policy is urgently needed."
