THAMES RACES. FAVOURITE WI«S DOUBLE. CUP TO FLYING JULIET. SURPRISE IX OPENING EVENT. With two outsiders successful in the opening evrnt at Parawai on Saturday, when ilie Thames meeting opened, the outlook was not promising for backers, hut they soon got into their stride, and the subsequent winners were all well supported. The Cup and Flying went to Flying Juliet and High Finance, which was the favourite combination. The weather and track were good, and the attendance large.

During the afternoon the amount passed through the totalisator was £19,513, against £17,484 at the last meeting on the Parawai course two years ago. This is an increase of £2029. Flying Juliet's Cup. Ohinemuri and King Smock were the late withdrawals from the Cup, the email field of half a dozen going to the post. Her good run when she finished a close fourth in the Grandstand Handicap at Ellerslie pointed to Flying Juliet, and the Romeo mare was made a good favourite, carrying _£909. Le Choucas was second choice with £695, and Wenday was supported to the extent of £513. The race was interesting, and the result suited backers, as the favourite went to the front at the start, and the lead was never taken from her, though Wenday was up with her most of the way. Just after the start the horses settled down to positions, Flying Juliet and Wenday being the leaders from Eh Timi, Te Koroke, Le Choucas, and Serang. No alteration took place along the back, but coming to the home turn Flying Juliet and Wenday were well clear of the others, Eh Timi still being third, with Te Koroke, Serang and Le Choucas following. In the straight Flying Juliet and Wenday settled down to a race home, Flying Juliet doing best and getting the verdict by half a length. Lβ • Choucas was a very moderate third, being three lengths away. Eh Timi, Te Koroke and Serang followed.

Tlje/e was little between Lucy Rose and Leitrim turning into the straight. Lucy Rose had Leitrim beaten when straightened up, but 100 yards from the finish Cammick brought Good Boy along, and getting a good run on the raile, won by a length. Leitrim was a length and a-half behind Lucy Rose. Frothblower, who had been last in the early part finished fourth. Whaka King, Orchue and-Arch Queen followed in the order written. Good Boy has been racing consistently in- his recent' starts, and the win was due. High Finance Easily.

Lmison, the second choice, had only £427 on her chance and the bracket, Tatutama and. Katarina £318. It was good judgment on the part of backers and the favouritoi filled toe places as supported. At-' the jump out Katarina was slow to go and High Finance at once dashed away in front with Liaison, Takutama and Billikins next. High Fifiance soon established a break and •oEoss the top was bowling along three lengths out in front of Liaison, Town Bird, Takutama, Billikins, Regent, and Mjwtter O'Rorke who were racing in that order. Hakanoa and Valroe weje next, Valroe failing to finish on in the run home.
