FATAL BURNS.
BIG BLAZE AT TE KUITI. BLOW LAMP EXPLODES. TRADESMAN A VICTIM. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) TE KUITI, this day. A two-storeyed wooden building owned and occupied by Mr. Arnold Blackman, cabinetmaker and undertaker, was partially destroyed by fire at eleven o'clock-to-day. Mr. Blackman and Mr. A. A. Avery, plumber, were preparing some zinc lining for a coffin when a violent explosion caused by the bursting of a primus blowlamp set the building in flames. Both men were overcome by the violence of the explosion, but they were saved by the prompt action of a railway engine driver in blowing a long whistle. Constable Kennedy and the fire brigade were early on the scene. Mr. Blackman, suffering from shock, was removed to his home, while Mr. Avery was removed in the ambulance to the hospital. Mr. Avery is reported to be suffering from serious burns to the head and face.
The stock and tools were destroyed. The building was insured in the State Fire Office for £273.
A later Press Association message states that Mr-; Avery died at 1.15 p.m.
