LADY DOCTOR'S DEATH.

SPLASHED BY CARBOLIC ACID. MISHAP IX GORE HOSPITAL DUNEDIN WOMAN'S END. (By Telegraph.—Presg Association.) GORE, this day. Tragic circumstances surrounded the death of Dr. A. Mathieson, resident woman medical officer of the Gore Hospital, who died there on Saturday. Just after 11 o'clock in the forenoon Dr. Mathieson was working with carbolic acid when the bottle vae smashed. The acid splashed over her body and face, and immediately began its deadly work. She also suffered severely from shock, and in a short time became unconscious.

Dr. Lillie was immediately called in and resuscitation efforts ■were carried out. These efforts were of no avail, and Dr. Mathieson slowly sank, and died about two o'clock in the afternoon. Dr. Mathieson came to the Gore Hospital from Dunedin some four or five months ago. and was a very popular and efficient officer.

An inquest was held to-day. The evidence ghowed that deceased was lifting a heavy bottle of carbolic acid when it smashed and caused deceased to be severely spattered. Doctor Matheson called for assistance and collapsed.

The usual restorative measures were resorted to, artificial respiration being carried on for three hours. The medical opinion was that death was due to severe shock, following extensive skin injury, the occurrence without doubt being purely accidental. A verdict along these lines was returned by the coroner. Deceased was 28 years of age.
