HAND INJURED.
ACCIDENT NEAR WHANGAREI. GUN IN A ROW BOAT. YOUNG MAN IN HOSPITAL. (By Telegraph.—Own -Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, this day. A distressing accident occurred at Whangarei Heads on Saturday afternoon resulting in serious injuries bein<r sustained by Thoinas Hollows, aged 20, who had bis left hand injured and his forearm filled with shot. Hollows and a friend, Robert Patterson, were two members of a picnic party which went to the Heads on board the launch Eva. They were engaged in snipe shooting and were carrying a doublebarrelled shotgun in a row boat. When they were returning they saw a snipe, and Hollows picked up the gun to have a shot, hut the firearm, which was loaded, struck a thwart, cocking itself and exploding. The injuries mentioned were the result. The. accident occurred within sight of the launch Eva. upon which the injured man was immediately embarked and a tourniquet was placed on his arm. The launch made the record journey of one hour to Whangarei and the sufferer was taken to hospital, where the necessary surgical attention was given. 'I he hospital authorities hope to save the injured hand if complications do not set in.
