TRAFFIC REGULATIONS.
MORE REGARD FOR PEDESTRIANS.
(To the Editor.)
Referring to the letter of 'Tedp*t'-lan" under the heading of "Safety Zones™*and Motors," I would like to remark that there fo a good deal of truth in what he says regarding, the danger to elderly people and those who are not agile. I saw an elderly lady knocked down by a motor car to-night, and if it had not been for the vigilance and care of the driver a fatality might have been recorded. After carefully watching the operations of the traffic inspectors I can only say that their efforts so far as I can see concern the regulating of motor traffic only, and do not apparently embrace the safety of the pedestrian—he can attend to himself, and if he has sufficient physical agility he may escape. Every day produces instances of narrow escapes from accidents, and sometimes, alas! serinrm accidents and fatalities occur. Surely it '* 'ftne that the civic authorities considered 1 in: construction of welllighted subways i-t all the congested spots such as the intersection of busy streets, which are absolutely dangerous at '"rush time," and indeed, quite difficult enough to negotiate' when traffic is normal. Either subways should be provided for the safety of the pedestrian or vehicular traffic of all sorts should be intermittently suspended, so as to afford a feeling of security to the foot passenger, who surely counts in the general scheme. If not now something must be done in this connection ia the not distant future. F. W. BEALE.
