GAS-FILLED ROOM.
FAMILY'S NARROW ESCAPE. FATHER AWAKES IN TIME. ILL FROM THE FUMES. A Ponsonby resident, Mr. T. Allen, with his wife and family, had a narrow escape last night from being killed by gas. When Mr. Allen awoke this morning he felt very ill. Only by an effort could he arouse himself, and he then found that the air was heavy with gas. Tracing the origin of the fumes to the kitchen he discovered one of the taps of the gas stove turned half on and the gas escaping. After turning off the supply he awoke his wife a'r.d children. They were all ill with the poison they had inhaled, but soon recovered in the fresh air outside. Mr. Allen's good fortune in waking when he did probably saved the lives of the whole family. He is the least affected by the experience, his training as assistant Harbour Board diver having strengthened his lungs. He was able to go on duty as gatekeeper this morning.
